It Helps To Know What A Golf Swing Is : And How To Play The Course
Golf's Five Swing Principles
1: THE GOLFER MUST CREATE A PROPER ADDRESS POSITION:
In the address position the feet are spread to shoulder width, and the ball is played off the inside of the left heel. Weight is on the insides of the feet in a "jumping" position, with the larger inside muscles engaged. There is the appearance of athletic, responsive comfort.
The triangle of arms and shoulders is intact, and the butt of the club is inside the triangle . Knees and hips are level. The right shoulder is lower than the left only because the right hand is lower than the left on the club. The grip is predominately in the fingers and should not cause tension in the shoulders.
Avoid curving the spine forward. Measure to the ball by inclining the spine erectly from the hips. The center of the chest is “up” and appears “tall” to the ball. There is no tension in the shoulders or arms.
2: THE GOLFER SHOULD ALIGN TO THE TARGET NOT THE BALL
Most golfers aim too far to the right. The line formed by the toes should point left of the target line. All golf shots should be to a small and definite target. "Aim small miss small". Poor aim means poor shots with little hope of improvement. Learn that it's ok to be a little "open" at address.
3: THE GOLFER MUST BEGIN THE SWING BY TRANSFERING WEIGHT TO THE BACK LEG:
To initiate the swing make a lateral weight shift into the inside of the rear leg. The hips do not turn they resist ; as the relaxed shoulders are allowed to coil to the top of the backswing. The arms do not lift the club; rather the weight shift alone causes the club to move away from the ball. The quicker the transfer the farther the ball will go.
4: THE SHOULDERS ARE TOTALLY RELAXED THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE SWING.
The unifying principle. Total shoulder relaxation during the swing will unlock your shotmaking potential as well as adding power and consistency. Good shots will no longer be a matter of lucky timing. This principle goes for all shots from the longest drive to the shortest putt.
5: RIGHT LEG AND KNEE POSITION:
The rear leg is the power source. The right knee remains braced during the backswing to provide resistance and power in the downswing. The downswing is created by a kick of the right foot and right knee towards the ball. The most common error made by the average golfer at this point is to literally reverse the process. That is, he initiates the swing with the arms and hands instead of the legs. When this happens the club must be cast out and over causing the club to approach the ball from the outside in.
Golf's 2 Playing Principles
1: A PLAN FOR THE COURSE.
You must have a plan for each and every hole and each and every shot. Hit and hope does not work. There is a correct way for you to play every hole on every course based on your ability. The fun part of golf is the strategy and the challenge of staying on plan. Knowing where to hit the ball and why will also allow your swing to become more fluid and purposeful.
2: HIT TO THE TARGET
As part of your overall plan you will choose intermediate targets. A habit of preparing for each shot with a target oriented pre-shot routine will allow you to play to your potential. The vision of the target as you swing will change your game forever!
